Welcome to Patient Empowerment Pulse: Real-Life Wisdom from a Professional Patient Who I Am Welcome to Patient Empowerment Pulse, a blog built on the hard-won wisdom of someone who’s lived both sides of the healthcare divide. I’m Joanna, and this is more than just a health blog—it’s a survival guide for anyone trying to navigate chronic illness, complicated care teams, and a medical system that often feels like it’s working against you. I didn’t set out to become a professional patient. I trained for a career in culinary arts. But life had other plans. Over the years, I was diagnosed with lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, spondylitic arthritis, inflammatory-onset diabetes, and a growing list of related conditions. That’s when I discovered that all my professional training didn’t fully prepare me for what it means to actually live this every day. This blog is where I share the str...

7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Your Next Doctor’s Appointment (That Could Change Your Care Forever)

Managing chronic illness means spending a lot of time at medical appointments—but how much of that time is actually helpful? Too often, we leave the doctor’s office feeling frustrated, confused, or unheard. The secret to better appointments isn’t just picking the right doctor—it’s showing up prepared.

Before your next visit, pause and ask yourself these seven questions. They could completely change the way you advocate for yourself—and help you walk away with the care you actually need.

1. What’s my #1 goal for this appointment?

Are you hoping to get a new symptom evaluated? Asking for a medication change? Needing help with side effects? If you don’t define your goal upfront, it’s easy to get sidetracked by small talk, test results, or whatever’s at the top of your chart. Knowing your priority keeps you focused.

2. What’s changed since my last visit?

New symptoms, worsening pain, side effects from meds—whatever’s different, write it down. Changes over time are critical data points, and they help your doctor spot patterns that might otherwise get missed. We highly recommend tools like this blood pressure monitor that track your results over time, so you can report them accurately to your doctor.

3. What do I need to follow up on?

Did your last appointment include bloodwork, imaging, or referrals? If so, what happened with those? Doctors see dozens of patients a day and can easily lose track of pending results. It’s up to you to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

4. What’s my body trying to tell me?

Sometimes symptoms become so constant that we stop noticing them. Before your appointment, spend a day or two tracking your body’s messages: Where does it hurt? What makes it better or worse? Are you more tired than usual? Those observations are often more valuable than a one-off blood test.

5. What’s confusing me right now?

Doctors are (usually) speaking their own language—but you deserve to understand. If you’ve been confused about a diagnosis, medication, or treatment plan, this is your time to ask. Write down anything that’s been foggy so you remember to get clarity.

6. What kind of support do I need from this doctor?

Are you looking for compassionate listening, a diagnostic detective, or someone who can prescribe aggressively when needed? Not every doctor fits every need, so knowing your ideal style helps you gauge whether this provider is the right fit.

7. What’s my plan if I feel dismissed?

This one’s tough, but it matters. If your concerns get waved off or minimized, how will you handle it? Will you push back? Ask for a second opinion? Politely redirect the conversation? Having a plan in place makes it easier to hold your ground without getting flustered.

Bonus: Turn This Into Your Personal Prep Sheet

Want to make this even easier? We’re creating a printable Doctor Visit Prep Sheet that walks you through these questions (plus space for notes). It’ll be available as a free download on our Ko-Fi shop—because every patient deserves to walk into their appointment feeling ready, confident, and empowered.

Your voice matters in your own care. Asking the right questions before you even walk through the door can make all the difference.

Dysautonomia 101: What to Track, What to Ask, and What No One Tells You

Living with dysautonomia can feel like walking through fog with no map—and trying to explain that fog to someone else while you’re still in it. Whether you’ve just received a diagnosis or are still piecing it together, this guide will help you navigate the chaos with a little more clarity. Because while dysautonomia is complex, your ability to advocate for yourself doesn’t have to be. What Is Dysautonomia, Really? Dysautonomia is a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system—the system responsible for regulating everything your body is supposed to handle automatically: heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, digestion, and more. When this system malfunctions, the effects can range from mildly inconvenient to utterly disabling. The most common types include: POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS) Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) Each subtype behaves differently, but all fall under the same frustrating umbrella: your body isn’t regul...
